Visive, C# Video processing framework

Hello and hi again, For the last few months i’ve been working on a video processing framework in dotnet and it’s about time to write up a small blog on it since it just hit 1.0 today (yay!).

If you’d want to take the origins of this project all the way back to when it all began you’d have to go back to when a little girl wanted to up her youtube game of mostly minecraft videos with some sick video editing tricks like cutting and maybe even music. This technology was very new at the time but a small program by a small team over at FXhome called Hitfilm express. This piece of software was the thing that truly got that young girl into filmmaking and especially video editing.

Hitfilm in 2022

what was really special about hitfilm express was how it was a stripped back version of the fully fledged Hitfilm pro which means it was insanely capable compared to every single other piece of free software available in 2017 (Possibly too good but we’ll get to that). It has a sleek modern interface and could handle multitrack editing and basic compositing workflows for some pretty damn good visual effects too. But why not just continue using this piece of amazing software or even upgrade to the pro version once she’d outgrown it?

Well a small company you might’ve heard of called Artlist bought FXhome and before you could say however many words you could say in whatever amount of time it took Hitfilm be it Express or pro was dead. Of course after a fair amount of enshittification before that.

So for the last few years, and especially since switching from Windows to linux as my daily driver i’ve been lacking any sort of tool to edit video which has honestly been pretty damn bad. So a few times i’ve begun the process of making my own in a sense spiritual successor to Hitfilm express with that similar workflow that i had been missing so much. But god dammit making the ui before the underlying engine was always a lot more fun that working on the important parts… like editing video. So they often fizzled out after not a lot of time. But after working on a lot of purely backend projects like Aural i started to get the hang of things.

So over past few weeks i started with the annoying parts and while my first few versions were horribly inefficient and slow with revisions it’s gotten better. I am not claiming that it’s the best, in any way, I’m an amateur to be completely honest, but i can say that it runs and edits video clips which is a lot further than i’ve come before which has to count for something.

I could probably write a whole blogpost on the technical details but for now this is what you’ll get since i haven’t eaten dinner yet and it’s getting late. So check out Visive on Github and have a great day.
